WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF EXFOLIATION?
1. CHEMICAL
Chemical exfoliants work in different ways depending on the type. AHAs and PHAs gently dissolve the bonds that hold dead cells together promoting their progressive exfoliation. No physical manipulation is necessary with chemical exfoliation; all that is needed is to apply the exfoliant, without rubbing, and let it rest on the skin to activate. BHAs work deeper in the pores to release impurities. There are 3 main types of chemical exfoliants:
-
AHAs/ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS: Water-soluble acids that effectively exfoliate the skin’s surface and stimulate skin renewal. Common AHAs include glycolic, lactic, phytic, citric, and mandelic acids.
-
BHAs/BETA-HYDROXY ACIDS: Lipid-soluble acids that penetrate deep into pores to dissolve sebum and impurities. One of the most common BHAs is salicylic acid.
-
PHAs/POLY-HYDROXY ACIDS: Water-soluble acids, with larger molecular sizes, PHAs gently exfoliate while providing hydration. Common PHAs include gluconolactone, lactobionic acid, and galactose.
2. PHYSICAL OR MECHANICAL
These types of exfoliators consist of small granules, which are gently massaged, in a circular motion, on damp skin. In this case, it is a matter of manually removing dead skin using these granules, such as rice or fruit stone powder, which have slightly abrasive properties. Physical exfoliation may not be suitable for more sensitive and/or reactive skin. It is also extremely important to ensure the exfoliant used is polished or spherical with no sharp edges that could cause damaging micro-lacerations in the skin.
3. ENZYMATIC
With this type of exfoliation, enzymes such as subtilisin or fruit enzymes gently dissolve and break down the bonds that hold the dead cells together to eliminate them. Simply apply the exfoliant and let the enzymes do their work for a few minutes. This makes enzymatic exfoliation ideal for sensitive skin.
